Raphael Varane’s Manchester United future is on the balance as the January transfer window opens.

Varane is on the last lap of his three-year contract with Manchester United. He will be out of contract in June 2024.

There was a one-year contract extension clause attached to his deal which would have extended his stay at Old Trafford till 2025.

As per The Sun, Manchester United have decided not trigger the extension clause.

United had until today January 1, 2024 to trigger the clause but have reportedly refused to do so.

This means Raphael Varane will be free to enter into contract talks with other clubs as the January transfer window opens today.

The French defender could join the list of high-profile transfer exits from Manchester United since Erik ten Hag became manager.

MySportDab understands United are still ready to enter into contract renewal talks with Raphael Varane despite refusing to trigger the extension clause.

INEOS, the new team incharge of Man United footballing operations, are reportedly keen on keeping the 2018 World Cup winner.

However, they are bent on slashing his wages, and also limiting the duration of his new contract should both parties reach an agreement, the Mirror reports.

Raphael Varane is 30 years old and is among the top earners at Manchester United with a weekly wage of £340,000.

It is understood United want a new deal that will peg down his wages – hence the decision not trigger the extension clause to leave more room for the club on the negotiation table.

If Raphael Varane refuse to accept a wage cut, he could possibly be allowed to leave as a free agent.

Varane joined Manchester United for £41m from Real Madrid in 2021, and was instrumental to the team’s prolific run last season under Erik ten Hag.

He has made 57 Premier League, 9 Champions League, 5 Europa League, and 3 EFL Cup appearances for the club, scoring 2 goals.
