Andre Onana Set to Quit International Football After AFCON Deadlock

Manchester United and Cameroon shotstopper Andre Onana is set to retire from Cameroon national team after his disappointing outing with the Indomitable Lions in the ongoing 2023 AFCON, MySportDab reports.

Onana, who delayed his link-up with Cameroon national team to play two more matches for Manchester United, saw himself sidelined by Cameroon national team manager Rigobert Song despite his best effort to link-up with the team before their AFCON opener against Guinea.

He started the second match against Senegal but was dropped in the third match and round 16 clash against Gambia and Nigeria, respectively.

Andre Onana has a long-running beef with FECAFOOT president and Cameroon football legend Samuel Eto’o, as per reports.

He also clashed with Cameroon national team manager Rigobert Song in 2022 World Cup leading to his premature exit from the tournament and subsequent retirement from international football.

However, he was back to the national team after a truce with Rigobert Song and was key to Cameroon’s 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

He was consequently included in Cameroon AFCON squad and was expected to retain his choice as the Indomitable Lions’ first-choice goalkeeper in the tournament.

Arriving late for the tournament, Onana fell off luck and ended up playing only one of Cameroon’s four AFCON games.

He is back to Manchester United after Cameroon crashed out of the tournament and is reportedly considering retiring from the national team following the AFCON deadlock, as per Daily Mail.

It will be the second time Onana will quit international football should he retire from Cameroon national team again.

He previously retired in 2022 after the World Cup fallout with Song and Eto’o before reversing his decision and returning to the team in September 2023.
