Kylian Mbappe picked up a ghastly and gruesome nose injury during France’s 1-0 Euro 2024 opening win over Austria, MySportDab reports.

Mbappe was crucial to France’s lone winner as his effort forced Austrian player Wober to mistakenly get the ball into the back of his net in the 38th minute.

The goal was the difference in the game as the tournament favourites saw off a fierce challenge by Austria to win the game.

However, it was a bad night for the European giants. Their talismanic forward Kylian Mbappe came out worse off the match with a gruesome nose injury late on.

The former PSG forward had attempted to head the ball during an aerial challenge but ended up colliding with the shoulder of Kevin Danso – an Austria player.

He immediately plunged to the ground in deep agony and was quickly covered with blood. French medical team had to quickly rush into the field to attend to him.

He was taken off the pitch but a frustrated France head Coach apparently asked him to go back into the pitch.

He then went back to the pitch and sat down to be attended to by the medical officers. Due to intentionally trying to delay the game, he was handed a yellow card while still nursing the injury.

After the medical assistance, Mbappe could not continue with the game and had to be subbed off in the 90th minute with Olivier Giroud coming on.

It is still yet unclear whether he will be able to make it back to the tournament but sources close to the French team have revealed the situation is looking worse and Mbappe could miss the entirety of the tournament with a surgical operation likely to treat the injury.

France ran out with a narrow 1-0 over the Austrians after a strongly-contested clash. Les Bleus are likely to miss Julian Mbappe in their next clash against Netherlands on Friday, June 21.
