Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, experienced their first defeat at the Paris 2024 Olympics, losing 75-54 to France in their second Group C game on Thursday.

The game, held at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, saw France’s defensive prowess overpower the Nigerian side.

D’Tigress, led by Ezinne Kalu, hoped to build on their opening 75-54 victory over Australia. Kalu, a New Jersey-born point guard and three-time AfroBasket champion, delivered another stellar performance, scoring 18 points. However, she received little support apart from Murjanatu Liman Musa’s 14 points.

France’s defense, which had already shown its strength in their previous win over Canada, proved too much for Nigeria. Gabby Williams led the French side with 14 points, seven assists, and six steals.

Marine Johannes added 15 points, contributing to France’s aggressive and physical play, which included 14 fouls and 13 steals. The French team’s size advantage was evident as they shot 22-of-35 from inside the 3-point line.

Despite Kalu’s efforts, Nigeria’s total points fell short of their tournament-opening score against Australia. D’Tigress struggled offensively, with 15 of their points coming from free throws.

The loss places Nigeria in a 1-1 record alongside Australia, while France improved to 2-0.

Rena Wakama’s team will have a chance to secure a historic knockout berth when they face Canada on Saturday. Meanwhile, France aims to complete a perfect run through the group with a matchup against Australia.

The upcoming games are crucial as the teams vie for positions in the knockout stages.

D’Tigress’ next challenge will be to regroup and address the issues highlighted in their defeat, particularly against a formidable Canadian side still searching for their first win of the tournament.
