The Nigeria Football Federation says Augustine Eguavoen, 59, will continue as interim head coach of the Super Eagles, MySportDab Reports.

Eguavoen-the federation’s technical director-will lead the three-time African champions into October’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya.

Eguavoen had been coaching Nigeria for the third time. He returned to his first appointment following unsuccessful talks with German coach Bruno Labbadia.

His team won a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo and the 0-0 draw against Rwanda put the Super Eagles top of Group B with four points from two matches.

Following this, the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has approved the recommendation to have Coach Augustine Eguavoen continue in charge as Head Coach for the 2025 AFCON qualifying matches against Libya next month.

He led the team to a 3-0 defeat of the Squirrels of Benin Republic and a goalless draw with Rwanda’s Wasps in matchdays 1 and 2.

He will be assisted by Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, and Olatunji Baruwa, while the match commissioner will be Slovenian Tomaz Zorec. The Super Eagles next play on October 6 against Libya in Uyo at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Veteran Nigerian coach Samson Unuanel has thrown his weight behind Eguavoen: “In football, a coach is only as good as his last match. Eguavoen earned four points in two games.

He deserves a chance to manage the national team for at least a year and show what he can achieve.

In a related development, the NFF approved the appointment of Justin Madugu as interim coach of the Nigeria women’s national team following the resignation of Randy Waldrum.
